Ft. Lee
Up

I started OCS sometime in April. I started and graduated with Golf Company. It lasted about six months. While in OCS I got pretty sick and was in the hospital for a while. However, I did not have to start again. Louise came to be with me in June. We weren't able to live together. OCS was very regimented, and all of the cadets had to live in barracks. Louise lived in Hopewell, Virginia, a town very close to Ft. Lee. One weekend our commanding officer got really mad at us. We were all put on restriction. The only way I was able to see Louise was to go to church.

Above is a picture of me when I was a Senior Cadet. In OCS we had rigorous physical training as well as pretty intense academic training. We learned how to be supply officers, how to fight battles, etc.

I was in OCS when during the Middle East Six-Day War. I remember the instructors were really happy during that period.

I graduated from OCS with my class sometime in September. Then I was able to go and live with Louise in Hopewell. Hopewell was referred to as the Chemical Capital of the South. It smelled bad. There were a lot of insects flying around Hopewell.

My duty while we were living in Hopewell was to go to PX (Post Exchange) School. I think it was about six weeks. I never used any of the training.

While in Hopewell, Louise and I purchased a new Volkswagen bug.

Between OCS and PX School Louise and I did a road trip up the east coast. We went to Danny Schafer's wedding in Massachussetts. During this trip up the east coast Louise became pregnant with Todd.

I remember that the 1967 World Series was on while I was in PX School. We watched all of the games during class. Bob Gibson won three games in the series. He earned the MVP award.

I finished PX School sometime in November. Louise and I started out driving the VW bug to Seattle with a stop in Fargo. I rolled the bug over in the median of I-94 somewhere around St. Cloud. However, we did stay in Fargo for a while. While we stayed in Fargo we drove up to the Grand Forks AFB so Louise could get some medical attention. We were worried that she or the fetus had been injured in the VW bug accident.

From PX School I had actually been assigned to Ft. Lawton in Seattle. However, when I went to check in I found that my orders had been changed to Ft. Lewis. We got to Ft. Lewis sometime at the end of 1967.
